Kyla La Grange is possibly my favourite artist at the moment, with 'Vampire Smile' crawling its way into my iTunes "Most Played" which is no mean feat - in doing so Kyla La Grange is up there with the big guns (Brandon Flowers, 'Romeo and Juliet') and the show stoppers (Lana del Rey "Video Games'). Kyla La Grange has an immediate swagger, an effortless twang that means her songs have somewhat of a Country feel to them - devoid of the bulging breasts and cheesy Cowboy hats! Instead, there's wispy Kyla with an array of gig photos showcasing a slim figure, an enviable wardrobe full of ripped tights and oversized tshirts and dresses, messy ombre hair and topknots aplenty. I recently used the word "bewitching" to define Kyla La Grange and really with her spellbinding songwriting, often contrasting dark, classic horror story imagery such as "I'm gonna get so drunk on you and kill your friends" with her sweet lilted voice borders on modern day witchcraft. Remember when Sarah Jessica Parker sings in "Hocus Pocus" entrancing all the children of Salem, this is the moment Kyla La Grange is having with her current display of rousing tracks. There is something about Kyla that just has you thinking that if you saw her live, the atmosphere would be electric, complete with goosebumps and apparently a witchy aura created through ambient lighting and natural elements, needless to say I'm intrigued. She's scheduled to play in Manchester and London in October and with tickets an actual pittance I hope I can check her out. On her recently released debut single 'Walk Through Walls' Kyla launches into a powerful display of vocals, that is reminiscent of Florence Welch - notorious for her dark provocative records. Whilst on her second single Kyla straddles a more folksy retro sound, reminiscent of Laura Marling or Anna Calvi. Then, on 'Vampire Smile' Kyla conjures up an Ellie Goulding softness and sweetness with Charli xcx's dark undertones . This beautiful display of vocal talent and ability to put her hand to almost anything strengthens her musical CV, demonstrating the extent to which she needs to get really famous, really fast! It's all very impressive, particularly when partnered with her Cambridge University education. Like Emeli Sande, Kyla La Grange shows you really can have it all, and in a music industry clouded with stars relying on "the sex factor" to sell their records what's more inspirational for young girls than this new wave of artists really proving you can have beauty, brains and a record deal!
